Inanna, Sumerian goddess

When Inanna descended into the underworld, ruled by her sister Ereshkigal, she had to pass through seven gates. At each, she must remove a possession--her shugurra (headdress), lapis beads, a double strand of beads, her breastplate, a gold ring, a lapis measuring line, and finally her royal robe. She stood naked, and was promptly killed by her sister, and hung on a hook. She was rescued, but had to offer her husband to spend half the year in the underworld.
